Sometimes, it’s not about getting your carpets cleaned. Sometimes, it’s about preventing seasonal allergies. During allergy season, many children and grown adults suffer, sneezing and coughing their way through their everyday activities. And sadly, most people don’t realize that their own carpets are against them. Carpet fibers trap allergens in place, preventing you from successfully keeping your home allergy free. This means that, without good carpet cleaning, you will be stuck sneezing and sniffling for many months after allergy season has passed. Don’t let that happen.

If you want your carpet really clean, you’ll have to understand a few things about dirt. First off, it can hide in your carpets. Dirt can sink down into your carpet fibers, meaning that regular vacuuming won’t cut it. Secondly, dirt isn’t just dust. It can contain harmful allergens and bacteria, which can hurt you and your family. And lastly, dirt can be removed easily by a

Don’t Vacuum!

Did you know that your carpets react badly to over-vacuuming? Yeah, there’s something that no one really wants you to know. I mean, I’ve been told countless times that I should vacuum the house one a day, if possible. But my own research has revealed that vacuuming once a day can severely damage your carpet fibers, ruining their stability and causing irreparable harm. So what can you do? Well, keep vacuuming. Once a week isn’t so bad and it will keep your carpets cleaner than most. However, instead of just vacuuming more, hire carpet cleaners to cleanse your carpets at least once a year. That will definitely keep your carpets clean and won’t ruin your fibers.

If you are going to clean your floors, then I recommend using natural cleaners. One of my favorites is Green Works. They have powerful cleaners that work hard to get floors clean without wrecking the environment.
The ingredients used in Green Works cleaners are biodegradable and never tested on animals. They don’t use any petrochemicals and have the conservation of our world in mind. And to top it all off, they clean really well!
There is a different Green Works cleaner for every room in your house and every cleaning job you can imagine. I use their multi-purpose cleaner that comes in the large bottle for my floors. It cuts through grease, grime, and dirt easily. Plus, it’s safe for my children and pets.

Do It Yourself

Do it yourself guys are a dime a dozen, but it takes good sense to see that something needs doing. I can’t tell you the number of times that I’ve seen do-it-yourself guys lazing around while something needs done. That’s just part of life.
Of course, having the right resources is important too. For instance, my husband told me that we didn’t need to hire a carpet cleaning company for our carpets. Instead we should do the carpet cleaning ourselves. But after a few months, he hadn’t done a thing.
So, I found out some information. If your husband is like mine, then he shops at Home Depot. Guys love that store. Well did you know that Home Depot rents machines? More specifically, they rent carpet cleaning machines.
Once I found this out and told my husband, a carpet cleaning machine was in my house within a week. He even moved all of the furniture into the dining room and kitchen for me so I could do the floors… of course, I still had to do the floors. Why is it that do-it-yourself men end up making their wives do most everything for them?
Well, that's beside the point. If you want to clean your carpets yourself, then why not rent a machine from a place like Home Depot. It saves you the time and money hiring a professional would cost.

Pet Stain Removal

If you have a new pet, then you will probably get a few stains here and there on your carpets. Even potty trained pets have accidents, drag in mud, or simply spill things on a regular basis. The idea is to be prepared.
If the stain is a potty stain, then you should work to get the smell out immediately. Even if you can’t smell anything, your pet will be able to find that spot easily and will continue to use that spot as a bathroom until the smell is gone.
Couch cushions and clothes can be easily washed in the washing machine, though I would recommend adding a box of baking soda along with your regular detergent. This will get the smell out and will clean the items well.
If you’re dealing with a carpet spot, then you need a cleaner specifically designed to get out pet odors. Many people use Resolve’s pet cleaner on these spots, and others rave about Out! Pet Odor Eliminator for their carpets. I personally use Out!, though I have a bottle of Resolve just in case.
If you need more tips, the Human Society has a whole section on their website dealing with pet stain removal. So check it out!

I know that carpet stains can seem impossible to get out, especially if you’ve tried all of the typical household remedies and they don’t work. If you’ve gone through vinegar, salt, dish soap, ammonia, water, lemon juice, and the like, chances are that you don’t want to even think about the stain anymore.
Unfortunately, you’ll have to. Unless you want to just cut out that piece of carpet like Mark Erickson recommends, you’ll need to get the stain out soon. And the sooner the better for many types of stains, right?
If household items aren’t working, you will need to pick up some basic stain remover from the store. Now don’t worry; stain removers aren’t all based on chemical warfare. There are many green cleaners and non-toxic sprays that you can try.
The most important thing is to get something you’re comfortable with, and make sure that your spray cleaner doesn’t contain bleach… unless you have white carpets. Try an environmentally friendly, pet friendly cleaner and you should be fine.
